Chasing Sunrises: My Poon Hill Trek Adventure in Nepal
If you’ve ever dreamed of standing above the clouds, watching the first light of the day paint the Himalayan peaks in gold and pink, then the Poon Hill Trek should be at the top of your bucket list. I recently completed this trek in Nepal, and it was everything I hoped for—and more.
Why I Chose Poon Hill Trek
I wanted a trek that was beginner-friendly, offered spectacular mountain views, and gave me a chance to experience Nepalese culture. At just over 3,200 meters, Poon Hill is the perfect combination of adventure and accessibility. Unlike longer, high-altitude treks, it doesn’t require weeks of preparation or extreme endurance—but it rewards you with the iconic Annapurna and Dhaulagiri panoramas.
The Journey Begins
My adventure started in Pokhara, the beautiful lakeside city known as the “Gateway to the Himalayas.” A scenic drive to Nayapul marked the beginning of the trek. From there, I walked through terraced fields, quaint villages, and dense forests, gradually climbing toward Tikhedhunga for my first night in the mountains.
Each village along the way was a glimpse into the life of the Gurung and Magar communities. Friendly locals welcomed trekkers with warm smiles, and small teahouses provided a cozy place to rest after each day’s hike.
Reaching Ghorepani and Poon Hill
The next day, I trekked to Ghorepani, surrounded by towering rhododendron trees. Early the following morning, I woke at 4 AM for the hike to Poon Hill. It was cold, dark, and quiet—until I reached the top.
The view was magical. The first rays of sunlight touched the peaks of Annapurna South, Machhapuchhre (Fishtail), and Dhaulagiri, turning snow into sparkling gold. I stood there for what felt like hours, taking in every angle, every detail, and every breath of the crisp mountain air.
Exploring Villages and Trails
After the sunrise, I descended back to Ghorepani for breakfast and continued to Tadapani and then Ghandruk. Each village had its own charm—stone paths, traditional homes, prayer flags fluttering in the wind, and the distant sound of cows and bells. Walking these trails, I felt a sense of peace and connection with nature that city life rarely offers.
Tips for Fellow Trekkers
- Start early for sunrise: The view from Poon Hill is worth the early wake-up.
- Stay hydrated and snack often: Energy is key on uphill trails.
- Dress in layers: Mountain mornings are cold, but it warms quickly under the sun.
- Respect local culture: Greet villagers, remove shoes inside homes, and keep trails clean.
- Bring a camera: You’ll want to capture every magical moment.

Standing on Poon Hill, watching the sunrise over the snow-capped peaks, I realized why this trek is a classic in Nepal. It’s not just the mountains—it’s the journey, the people, and the moments of quiet awe that make it unforgettable.
